While it wasn't originally part of the plan, our Disneyland / Las Vegas itinerary was altered slightly when Carrie learned that I would be going to the Grand Canyon in February. After years of living in Albuquerque, NM, you see, I never made it up to the canyon. Carrie had also never seen the Grand Canyon, so we decided to make a slight detour to see it together for the first time.
We arrived in Las Vegas on Wednesday, and took a tour bus to the canyon that left at 6:20am on Thursday. While I was tired, I was glad someone else was doing the driving, and they showed some documentaries about the canyon and Hoover Dam which were pretty interesting. After stops in Kingman and Williams, we finally arrived and were greeted with lots of snow an icicles.
The sun was low in the sky and there was some cloud cover, which I thought would be perfect for shooting. Well, I was right and wrong. After fighting my images in post to remove the blue cast, I am mostly happy with them. They don't have exactly the "pop" I was looking for, but I think more than any other landscape I have shot, this one really begs to be photographed at sunrise and sunset. The canyon walls are so far apart that if there is any haze (and this was a very clear day at ground level!) the images take on a flat, hazy blue cast.
I shot both the E-P3 and Canon 7D with very similar results. Since we only had two hours at the canyon, which did not include sunset, I'm hoping for some better images in February. I was dashing from one spot to the next looking for the best composition, all the while watching the clock. I hope to slow down, pick a spot, and enjoy shooting the sunrise and sunset knowing that the bus isn't about to leave without me!
And, finally, the ubiquitous behind the scenes camera phone shot. I should have used the 7D, but I had a 70 - 200mm mounted at the time to catch the elk on the trail!
